Allow me to introduce myself. I'm a UX designer who spends my weekdays thinking about consumer banking and my weekends, thinking about whether my apartment really needs rearranging again (It doesn't but I’m still doing it). I'd rather run a tree test than win an argument, though I'm capable of both, and I follow an account called @fashionisdata on Instagram, which should tell you plenty. Design isn't something I switch off, it just takes shape in different ways.
What I do
I design the screens people hit on their worst day; locked out, can't find the thing, trying to move their own money and getting told no by a form. Nobody has ever loved a banking app, and I've made my peace with that. My goal is more modest: don't be the reason someone's day gets worse.
That's usually where the interesting problems live. In the unglamorous middle. Navigation nobody notices until it fails. Account recovery flows nobody meets unless they're already annoyed. Internal tools nobody was ever excited to use, which might be my favorite kind of problem of all, because nobody forgives a bad interface just for having good intentions behind it.
Research first process
My process starts the same way every time: research before opinions. The useful part is almost never the finding I expected walking in. It's the offhand comment, usually from someone in sales, that quietly invalidates three weeks of assumptions. That's the good part.
From there, I design something that solves the user's problem AND the business's problem at the same time. A design that only does one of those tends to get rolled back within six months, and nobody ever sends you a note about it.
